Billionaire Elon Musk's company X, formerly known as Twitter, has filed a lawsuit against Media Matters and its writer Eric Hananoki over an allegedly “intentionally false report” about anti-Semitism on the platform.
In its lawsuit, filed in US District Court in Texas, Company X claims Media Matters is defaming its reputation. In this way, the organization is “manipulating” the social network by using accounts that only follow the profiles of major brands or users producing fringe content, X claims.
The Washington Post writes about this.
Thus, the Media Matters report shows screenshots of the main advertisements that appeared next to pro-Nazi content on X. As a result of this, popular companies, in particular IBM, Apple and Disney, suspended their advertising on the social network.
But X claims in its lawsuit that Media Matters is manipulating X's algorithm. They say the organization used accounts for research that followed only the profiles of major brands or users producing fringe content. These accounts “constantly scrolled and refreshed” the feed until they found ads next to extremist posts.
As a result, Elon Musk's company said the Media Matters report distorted the typical X experience with the “intent of harming the social network and its business.”
Media Matters President Angelo Carusone called the lawsuit “frivolous” and said it was “designed to intimidate X's critics into silence.”
However, on the same day that X's complaint was filed, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton began investigating Media Matters' “potential fraudulent activity.”
Let us recall that Elon Musk previously supported an anti-Semitic post on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter), in which members of the Jewish community are accused of promoting “dialectical hatred” against white people .
