Austria's team captain Julian Baumgartlinger has had another operation on his left knee. As Bayer Leverkusen announced on Tuesday, the procedure was carried out on Monday in Munich. Baumgartlinger will be out in the long term, it said on the part of the German Bundesliga club. The 33-year-old midfielder is expected to return in January 2022.

Baumgartlinger injured his cruciate ligament last January, but then fought his way into Austria's EM squad. At the tournament he made a short assignment. The Salzburg man only had a few minutes of play at Leverkusen in the new season before problems with his knee slowed him down again. For the games in the World Cup qualification, Baumgartlinger said the last time.
