Sputnik V, a Russian coronavirus vaccine, has been registered in Iraq. This was announced on Thursday, March 4, by the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), reports TASS.

“RDIF announces registration of the Russian vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik V by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Iraq. Iraq became the 45th country to register the Sputnik V vaccine. The registration of the drug was carried out within the framework of an emergency use authorization (EUA), ”the message says.

The RDIF added that Sputnik V is one of only three drugs in the world with an efficiency of more than 90 percent. The vaccine provides full protection against severe cases of coronavirus disease, experts said.

On March 4, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) began an examination of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.

Previously, 44 countries have already registered the Russian drug.

On February 18, the head of the RDIF, Kirill Dmitriev, said that the countries that have signed a supply contract with Moscow must release 1.4 billion doses of the vaccine, which can be used to inoculate 700 million people. At the same time, some manufacturers – China, India, Iran and South Korea – will produce the drug for export to third countries.

Sputnik V is the first registered Russian vaccine against coronavirus, it was created on the basis of another adenovirus, in which the coronavirus gene is embedded. When it enters the cells, it forms proteins in them – they cause immunity and promote the development of antibodies.
