Hollywood star Angelina Jolie sold a painting by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque, which her ex-husband Brad Pitt gave her ten years ago. The painting went under the hammer at Christie's for a record 8.28 million pounds ($ 11.5 million), according to the press service of the auction house.
It is noted that initially experts estimated this canvas at one and a half to two and a half million pounds ($ 2-3.4 million). The name of the new owner was not disclosed.
The painting depicts a sunset over an ancient mosque located in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. The British Prime Minister wrote it after the Casablan Conference in 1943, and then presented it to the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Roosevelt. Later, the canvas was inherited by Roosevelt's son Eliot, after which it changed several owners, was exhibited at exhibitions and auctions. Actor Brad Pitt acquired the painting in 2011.
