The Federal Chancellor's Office is in favor of extending the current lockdown in Germany to April, German media reported on Sunday, March 21, citing a copy of the draft agreement at their disposal for the participants of the upcoming conference on March 22 – German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of the federal states – which will discuss further measures to contain the coronavirus epidemic in Germany.
The exact end date of the lockdown is not specified in this document. No new steps are envisaged to weaken anti-coronavirus restrictions, which is explained by “a new surge in infections and the exponential dynamics of infection.” At the same time, the Länder and Regions are encouraged to enable the launch of “time-bound model projects that will open up certain areas of public life with strict protective measures and a testing concept.”
The draft document also provides for the possibility of the population taking vacations on the territory of their own federal lands – subject to minimizing contacts. This must be achieved through “compliance with current restrictions on social contacts, strict hygiene practices and implementation of a testing plan,” the draft agreement says.
