Ancient mystery: scientists have determined the age of lion cubs from permafrost
The secret of the cave lion cubs is revealed. Scientists have determined the age of the remains of animals that were found in 2017-2018 in the Yakut permafrost, MIR 24 reports.
The kittens were given nicknames – Sparta and Boris. The lion cubs lived very little – one or two months – and died, possibly falling into crevices. Initially, scientists believed that the lion cubs were relatives. But it turned out that the age difference between them is 15.5 thousand years. Boris lived about 43 thousand years ago, and Sparta – 28 thousand years ago.
“As for this lion cub, it is unique in that its insides, external morphostructure and skeleton, hair and internal organs have been preserved, and, perhaps, we hope, some of the decayed parts of mother's milk have remained intact. Then we will be able to understand what his mother's diet was, ”said Valery Plotnikov, an employee of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

Cave lions lived in Eurasia, including the northernmost regions, and became extinct about 10 thousand years ago. This happened due to the resettlement of primitive people, which significantly pressed animals. Outwardly, they resembled modern lions, but were larger.
