An unidentified suspect, armed with a pistol, approached a parked Los Angeles police patrol car and opened fire without warning. He managed to seriously injure two police officers and escape, writes the Los Angeles Times.
The publication refers to the video from the surveillance camera, which came to the disposal of the editorial office. It shows that the shooter approaches the car and shoots at close range, after which he runs away. One of the wounded police officers manages to call for help, several patrols arrive at the scene at once.
The victims are reported to have sustained head injuries, but are likely to survive. They are a 31-year-old woman, mother of a 6-year-old child, and a 24-year-old man. They began their service just over a year ago, while completing their studies at the same time.
A small group of protesters gathered outside the hospital where they were admitted for surgery. It is known that they interfered with the passage of medical vehicles and at least one of them shouted that he wished the victims to die. As a result, two people were detained: one of the protesters and a woman who tried to prevent his arrest.
The episode has been compared to another resonant attack. In 2014, two police patrol officers were shot dead in New York. Their killer, African American Ismail Abdullah Brinsley, said he was taking revenge for those killed in the detention of blacks.
