Immunologist Yakov Berkun assessed the effectiveness of vaccines against a new mutation of the coronavirus. The head of the department in the Jerusalem clinic Hadassah Ar Ha-Tsofim told RIA Novosti about this.
According to him, drugs registered in various countries may be quite effective against a new strain of the virus. The specialist stressed that even if the changes in the genome of the disease turn out to be significant, scientists will still be able to finalize the vaccines as soon as possible.
At the same time, the immunologist explained that so far there is no reliable information about the mutated coronavirus. He noted that over the past year, there should have been a thousand mutations of the disease, but none of them significantly changed the virus.
Earlier, scientist Neil Ferguson spoke about the dangers of a new coronavirus mutation for children. According to him, the proportion of cases of infection of children with this strain is much higher than that of the already known variant of the disease.
A dangerous mutation of the coronavirus was discovered in September in the UK. To date, about a thousand cases of infection with the new strain have been identified. The mutation has also been identified in patients in Denmark, the Netherlands, South Africa. The British Advisory Board on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats said this variant of the coronavirus is spreading faster.
More than 20 countries, including Russia, announced the suspension of transport links with the UK.
