An iceberg the size of Petersburg broke away from Antarctica

An iceberg with a size of 1270 square kilometers broke away from Antarctica, which is comparable to the territory of St. Petersburg. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the British Antarctic Survey.

The iceberg has broken away from the Brunt Ice Shelf and is home to the British research station Halley. The crack on the glacier appeared more than 10 years ago. On February 26, it rapidly expanded by several hundred meters, which is why an iceberg was formed.

“Our Antarctic Survey UK teams have been ready to break the iceberg from the ice shelf for several years. We monitor the state of the glacier every day, ”said Service Manager Jane Francis. She added that the iceberg could move away from the continent or run aground and stay close to the glacier.

Earlier, a gigantic iceberg weighing 315 billion tons and a surface area of more than 2.5 thousand square kilometers broke away from the Aymery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica.
