An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 hits the Indonesian part of New Guinea

Moscow. August 28. INTERFAX.RU – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 was recorded in the northern part of the island of New Guinea in Indonesia, 117 km south of the city of Jayapura, reports the Altai-Sayan branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to the branch, the epicenter of the earthquake recorded at 15:27 Moscow time on Saturday was 60 km from the border with Papua New Guinea.

According to the intensity of shaking at the epicenter, the seismic event is assessed as “very strong”.
