An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred off the coast of Sakhalin Island

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred off the coast of Sakhalin Island on the morning of February 6. This was reported in the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, RIA Novosti reports.

The seismic event was recorded off the east coast at 08:18 local time (00:18 Moscow time). The hearth lay at a depth of 23 kilometers. As specified in the service, the tremor was felt by residents of the city of Okha, the villages of Vostochnoye, Tungor, Ekhabi, Val and the urban-type settlement of Nogliki. Its perceptibility was up to 3 points.

According to preliminary data of the regional Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, there are no casualties and destruction as a result of the incident.

On January 18, an earthquake occurred in the southern part of Sakhalin. Aftershocks of up to 4-5 points were felt by residents of the villages of Sinegorsk, Yablochnoye, Chekhov and Pioneers. The magnitude of the tremor was 4.3. As a result, no one was injured.
