It is not yet clear whether the aid will be shared.
Pro-Palestinian activists tried to disrupt a speech in Congress by United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken, arguing for the need to extend aid to Ukraine and Israel. He and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin aimed to persuade lawmakers and senators to vote for a combined package of more than the $105 billion the Biden administration is asking for.
This is discussed in the story of TSN’s own correspondent in the USA, Olga Koshelenko.
Blinken was unfazed.
It is noted that pro-Palestinian activists who spoke exclusively against aid to Israel tried to disrupt the performance. They were sitting in the hall and when Secretary of State Blinken began to speak, they began to stand up – about 1 person per minute and shout slogans calling for “to stop the genocide in Palestine, immediately implement a ceasefire and not kill Palestinian children.” And since they stood up one at a time, the performance was constantly interrupted, law enforcement officers came in and took out the screaming person. The rest of the protesters could be identified by the fact that their palms were painted red, which was a hint of blood. But they were not touched until they began to make noise.
It should be noted that Secretary Blinken was completely unfazed and picked up where he was interrupted.
There is no unity of help yet
If these protesters have no complaints about Ukraine, then in Congress itself the situation is the opposite. Israeli aid is very supportive. Speaker Johnson has said he wants to separate Ukrainian aid from the rest of the package. Both Blinken and Austin came to argue that these are related cases, because, firstly, the national security of the United States depends on both of them, that Hamas and the Putin regime are pursuing similar goals – to wipe their democratic neighbors off the map, that the victory of tyrants and terrorists will be costly in general, to the whole world and, above all, will strengthen American enemies.
“When we cut off Russia's traditional supply lines for its military, it increasingly turns to Iran for help. Moscow is supplying Iran with increasingly advanced military technology that poses a threat to Israel's security. Allowing Russia to win with Iran's support will simply embolden it. both Moscow and Iran,” Blinken said.
There is no consensus among Republicans on whether the package should be brought to a vote together or divided.
Let us remind you that the administration of US President Joe Biden accused Republicans from the House of Representatives of politicizing national security interests. This came after they proposed a separate bill with Israeli assistance without Ukraine using IRS appropriations.
