Using old relief photographs of Lachish, archaeologists have discovered an ancient Assyrian military camp. The site is mentioned in the Bible; according to the story, the Assyrians were destroyed by an angel.
Recent archaeological research has revealed the remains of ancient military camps of the Assyrian Empire, dating back to ca. 700 BC e. This discovery may confirm the biblical story of the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem.

Stephen Compton, a researcher in Near Eastern archeology, used modern mapping techniques to find what he believes are the remains of Assyrian military camps. Compton said the discovery was consistent with descriptions found in Assyrian texts, Greek histories and the Hebrew Bible.
The decisive evidence comes from stone panels in the British Museum that were once part of the palace of the Assyrian king Sennacherib. These panels, which depict a fortified military camp with 24 watchtowers, were compared with early aerial photographs of Lachish in Israel to create a virtual map identifying the location of the camp.
Compton explained that by superimposing early 20th-century photographs onto the landscape depicted on Assyrian reliefs, he was able to identify a camp site that matched the shape and features of Assyrian military buildings.
