In Karelia, near the village of Tiurulla, Lakhdenpokhsky region, a mass grave was found. It is preliminary known that the remains of about 140 people are buried here. The exact number of those buried is determined by experts.
The Investigative Department of the TFR in Karelia has begun a pre-investigation check. Experts have come to the conclusion that the burial is more than a hundred years old. In addition to numerous human remains, the remains of household items were also found here. Investigators will involve historians and archaeologists in the verification.
The Karelian historian Sergei Verigin has already put forward a version that the burial may date back to the 17th century, when these lands were transferred to Sweden under the Stolbovski Peace Treaty: the Swedes, actively implanting the Lutheran faith, faced massive opposition from Orthodox Karelians, part of the population died in clashes.
Earlier, “DP” reported about the mass graves found in the Novgorod region, relating to the period of the Great Patriotic War.
