The mayor of the city wants to eradicate this area.
Amsterdam, the Netherlands, authorities have proposed a new location for an “erotic center” as part of controversial plan to move out of the famous red light district.
This is reported by RTE.
Mayor Femke Halsema wants to eradicate the area and move it from the inner city to a purpose-built centre, aiming to shed Amsterdam's “sin city” image while reducing the number of tourists and petty crime in the area.
“Europe Boulevard in the southern district turned out to be the most successful location for a new erotic center,” a city spokeswoman said. “This selection will be presented to the City Council early next year,” the statement added, noting that they expect it will be seven years before the center can open.
Halsema has long opposed the “red light district” known as De Wallen, with its neon windows in canal houses, where prostitutes wait for clients.
Boulevard Europa, located on the outskirts of Amsterdam's main business district, was one of three options for the construction of an erotic center with 100 rooms for sex workers.
But the city's plans are opposed by local residents who don't want the new facility on their doorstep, as well as prostitutes who see themselves as scapegoats for criminals and crowds visiting the area.
The location will put the “erotic center” close to the European Medicines Agency, which also opposed the move, saying it could affect the safety of people working late in the office.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people have signed various petitions against the move, calling for better crowd control and increased police surveillance in De Wallen, especially at night.
Recall that the Pope allowed the blessing of same-sex couples. However, this blessing should not resemble a marriage ceremony.
