The US Embassy in Belarus advised the Americans in the republic to stock up on food before the start of the opposition ultimatum. This is stated in a statement on the website of the diplomatic mission.
The embassy recalled that a so-called people's ultimatum was announced last week, calling on the government of Belarus to fulfill certain requirements by October 25. Opposition leaders also spoke about the consequences of non-compliance with these requirements: protests, strikes, blocking mobile communications, and more. “Given the ultimatum, security forces and protesters can intensify the use of force during protests, demonstrations, rallies and other similar mass gatherings,” the diplomats said in a statement.
In this regard, US citizens in Belarus were urged to avoid mass gatherings, always carry a passport with them, and also provide themselves with a three-day supply of food, water, medicine and money.
On October 13, the former presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya presented an ultimatum to the current head of state, Alexander Lukashenko. Among the demands that the authorities must fulfill by October 25 are Lukashenka's resignation from the presidency, an end to street violence and the release of all political prisoners.
Later, member of the Presidium of the Coordination Council Pavel Latushko said that as the term of the popular ultimatum expires, the Belarusian opposition will increase its activity. At the same time, the politician refused to disclose the details of the policies.
In Belarus, for the third month, there have been mass protests over the official results of the presidential elections on August 9, according to which Lukashenko won 80 percent of the vote. The protesters were supported by the workers of a number of enterprises, announcing the strike.
