US intelligence agencies were able to take the place of hackers and hacked into the servers of one of the most daring cybercriminal groups, Revil. The hackers were forced to cease their activities.
The American special services have been preparing for this operation for a long time, but getting on the trail of hackers was a rather difficult task. But after Revil, whose name translates as “the evil of ransomware”, attacked the IT company Kaseya, which operates networks of small companies without its own IT departments, the hackers were still able to strike back.
A typical cyberattack was carried out on Revil's infrastructure, carried out by US intelligence agencies with the help of unnamed foreign partners. After it, the hackers quickly restored their resources with the help of backups, but they were already being followed by law enforcement specialists. After that, all Revil servers were hacked.
At the same time, it is believed that Revil is located in Russia, since these hackers have always emphasized that they are Russian-speaking. It is even accepted in the West that they serve the Russian government. But after such an attack, the hackers were forced to stop their activities, and the connection with Russia was not confirmed.
Tom Kellerman, Cybercrime Advisor to the US Secret Service, head of the cybersecurity department of the VMWare software manufacturer, commented on the situation. “The FBI, along with the US Cyber Command, the Secret Service and like-minded countries, have taken serious action against these hacker groups,” the expert noted. Not a word has been said about Russia.
