American scientists have created an artificial kidney
Experts from the United States have developed a prototype of an artificial kidney that can help with renal failure without hemodialysis and drugs, according to the UCSF portal.
Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco have invented a bio-artificial kidney that can be implanted into the body, where it will take over the functions of a normal kidney. At the same time, patients will not need to suppress immunity and thin the blood with the help of pharmacological drugs.
Two arteries pass through the artificial kidney: one supplies blood to the apparatus for cleaning, and from the other, filtered blood enters the body. The device is equipped with a hemofilter made of silicon semiconductor membranes that cleanse the blood from toxins, as well as a bioreactor, which contains artificial cells of the renal tubules, which are responsible for metabolism.
During testing, each component of the implant was tested individually and then assembled. It is capable of operating on human blood pressure without additional support from medical equipment.
The developers are going to continue working on the artificial kidney in order to bring it to market in the future. For this, the device must undergo preclinical tests and clinical trials.
Recall that in November 2020, scientists from the United States developed a biorobot that can restore living cells. And in June 2021, American and British specialists showed a pacemaker that can work wirelessly.
