Joe Ligon, supposedly the oldest and longest-serving criminal in the United States, has been released. He was released after 68 years in prison, and for the first time he went to prison at the age of 15, says CNN.
Ligon was arrested in 1953: as a teenager, he participated in a gang that organized robbery and murder on the streets of Philadelphia. He was found guilty of involvement in two murders, he admitted that he attacked a man with a knife at least once, but did not confess to the murder.
“The child who committed these crimes in 1953 no longer exists. The man who was released from prison in 2021 is already 83 years old, he has grown, changed and is no longer a threat, ”said lawyer Ligona.
The elderly American was already about to be released in 2016 and 2017, but he refused the conditions of release that were offered to him: he wanted to be released without any follow-up, and eventually achieved this by 2021.
