American intelligence was convicted of buying databases on its citizens

The US Department of Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) was accused of buying up databases on its citizens. According to The New York Times, this is done bypassing the court, TASS reports.

In particular, the journalists refer to the materials that the staff of the department, upon request, provided to Senator Ron Wyden. It follows from them that over the past two and a half years, as part of five investigations, intelligence tracked the movements of Americans using databases that were purchased from brokers. It is noted that they are compiled for commercial purposes by analyzing information collected by smartphone applications.

The publication suggests that the DIA uses this data to investigate foreigners abroad, since one of the tasks of the department is “to identify threats to American forces deployed around the world.” However, to request such information from telecommunications companies, you must first obtain a court order.

According to the newspaper, in this case, the RUMO is using a loophole in the law on the protection of personal information, since it is not necessary to receive a warrant to purchase a database. It is reported that Senator Wyden plans to seek tougher regulations. In his opinion, the fact that data on American citizens can be purchased is unacceptable.

In 2018, data aggregator Exactis published 340 million records of American adults on a public server. An array of more than two terabytes contained a dossier for each person, including phone numbers, home address, email and other personal information.
