Chief American infectious disease specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci named the condition for the formation of herd immunity from coronavirus in an interview with The New York Times.
According to the doctor, 70 to 90 percent of Americans need to be vaccinated to do this. “But I'm not talking about the exact 90 percent,” he added. Fauci stressed that experts do not know the exact proportion of residents that is needed to form herd immunity.
The infectious disease specialist recalled his previous predictions. Previously, he believed that the population would acquire immunity to the virus when 60-70 percent of residents were vaccinated. “When polls showed that only about half of all Americans would be willing to get the vaccine, I said herd immunity would be 70 to 75 percent,” he said. When the number of people who were ready to be vaccinated in the United States reached 60 percent, Fauci predicted herd immunity in 80-85 percent of those vaccinated.
Over the entire time in the United States, more than 18.6 million people have been infected with the coronavirus and more than 237.4 tests for infection have been carried out. The country is in first place in the number of cases of COVID-19 in the world.
