Deep red Corona year and almost total failure in January 2021
As expected, the net overnight sales of Vienna's accommodation providers fell in 2020. The corona pandemic caused a decrease of 76.6 percent to 239 million euros. Vienna Tourism announced this on Tuesday. The December numbers have now also been evaluated – and they are also deep red. Sales fell by 93.3 percent to EUR 7.8 million.
The number of overnight stays has already been determined for January 2021, when leisure tourism was no longer possible due to the lockdown: 58,000 overnight stays mean a decrease of 94.9 percent compared to the same month last year.
Most of the guests came from Austria, unsurprisingly. The average occupancy of the hotel beds in January was 4.6 percent (1/2020: 46.9 percent), that of the rooms around 6 percent (1/2020: around 61 percent).
Naturally, the number of open businesses has also decreased dramatically. According to Wien Tourismus, only around 32,000 hotel beds were available in Vienna in January. A year ago it was more than twice as much.
