All the Ladas. VFM will receive the first non-nuclear submarine of Project 677 in 2022.

The launching ceremony of the Project 677 Lada diesel-electric submarine Kronshtadt at the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg.

It is planned to transfer the first serial non-nuclear submarine of the fourth generation of project 677 (code “Lada”) “Kronstadt” to the Russian Navy next year. There is no official confirmation of this information yet. Previously, the dates for the transfer of submarines of this class were constantly postponed due to the unavailability of the project.

The first serial submarine of project 677 “Kronstadt” was laid down in 2005, its construction was suspended and was resumed only in 2013. On September 20, 2018, the boat was launched at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg. The lead boat of this project 677 “St. Petersburg” in September 2021 entered the combat composition of the Northern Fleet. The dates for the transfer of the Kronstadt and Velikie Luki submarines to the Russian Navy have been repeatedly postponed.

Lada submarines have been developed since the eighties of the last century. Several times the project was suspended due to lack of funding and difficulties during the testing of ships. Initially, it was planned to create a fundamentally new non-nuclear submarine with a closed-loop engine for operations in the near sea zone with a closed-cycle power plant, that is, an aerobic engine. Such submarines will be able to stay under water for several weeks in autonomous mode without surfacing. But it was not possible to create a working aerobic engine.

Nevertheless, Project 677 is the most high-tech in the Russian Navy, several new technical solutions have been used in the design of Lada submarines, which can significantly reduce the noise of these ships. For example, this is facilitated by a new anti-hydrolocation coating on the case. Also, equipment, in the process of which vibrations can occur, is installed on vibration mountings. In addition, the submarine's propulsion system uses a permanent magnet multi-mode main propulsion engine, which is generally quieter than traditional asynchronous electric motors.

The submarine is made of one and a half hull, with this scheme, the strong hull is only partially covered by a light hull, filled with water when submerged and air when surfacing. The one-and-a-half-hull scheme, in comparison with the double-hull, allows to somewhat reduce the dimensions of the ship, increase its maneuverability and reduce the immersion time.

Project 677 submarines of the “Lada” type belong to the fourth generation of diesel-electric submarines, they are designed to destroy submarines, surface ships and ships, enemy coastal facilities, as well as to lay minefields, disembark and receive reconnaissance and sabotage groups. Armed with “Lada”, in particular, missile systems “Caliber-PL”. These submarines with a displacement of 1,800 are distinguished by a low noise level due, in particular, to a new anti-hydrolocation coating of the hull. They are capable of speeds up to 21 knots, diving to a depth of 350 meters. The ship's crew is 36 people.
