Abdelmajid Tebbun

Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebbun has contracted the coronavirus. This was announced by the administration of the head of state, reports Reuters.

As noted, the 75-year-old Algerian leader was tested, which showed that he had COVID-19. The politician is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Germany, and his condition is improving.

Earlier, the Algerian authorities announced that Tebbun arrived in Germany for a medical examination last week. This happened after the coronavirus was found in employees of his administration.

Reuters notes that the president is a smoker. He was elected less than a year ago during the country's largest political crisis in decades. The agency points out that his absence due to illness could slow down efforts to implement economic reforms aimed at reducing Algeria's dependence on revenues from the sale of energy resources, whose reserves are rapidly decreasing.

In Algeria, since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of about 58.5 thousand cases of infection have been recorded. Almost 2 thousand of the sick have died.

At the end of September, US President Donald Trump became infected with the coronavirus. The American leader was treated at the Walter Reed Military Hospital. Prior to that, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suffered from coronavirus infection.
