Airlines need another $ 80 billion

According to the lobby association IATA, airlines worldwide can only survive the next few months with additional subsidies.

According to the lobby association IATA, airlines worldwide will need a further 70 to 80 billion dollars (59 to 68 billion euros) in the next few months to survive the consequences of the corona crisis. “Otherwise some airlines will not survive,” said Alexandre de Juniac, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), on Friday at the Paris Aviation Forum.

We are very grateful to the governments for supporting aviation with $ 160 billion. But there is further need.

IATA had previously estimated that the industry is likely to lose $ 87 billion this year. However, the recently tightened containment measures in the fight against the virus pandemic are placing an additional strain on business in the aviation industry.

“It is very likely that we will have to expect larger losses than the numbers we announced,” said De Juniac. The losses for 2020 are even likely to amount to almost $ 100 billion.

The IATA had predicted a slow recovery, with a further decline in passenger numbers of 30 percent next year and a return of air traffic to pre-crisis levels only in 2024. That too could turn out to be too optimistic, warned De Juniac. “We estimate that by the end of 2020 air traffic will be at 33 percent of its 2019 level and then – we hope – at 50-60 percent by the end of 2021.”
