Air pollution linked to increased risk of cardiac arrest

Italian doctors from the San Mateo Polyclinic said pollutants in the air increase the risk of cardiac arrest. They spoke about this at the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology, reports “Gazeta.Ru”.

Doctors collected data on the daily incidence of cardiac arrest in 2019 in several Italian provinces and compared it with information on daily concentrations of various substances in the air.

As a result, they were able to establish that most often cardiac arrest occurred on days when the concentration of particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, benzene and sulfur dioxide significantly increased in the air.

At the same time, experts found an inverse relationship in the case of ozone – the higher its concentration in the air, the less often cardiac arrest occurred.

Now doctors are going to use the obtained data to predict the frequency of cardiac arrest in different regions based on monitoring the composition of the air.

Earlier, Swedish scientists from the Karolinska Institute found that people with periodontitis have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
