Agreement That Could End War: CNN Says Trump May Back Down Before Putin

by alex

What Trump's “agreement” could be.

Donald Trump, who will soon become the 47th President of the United States, said that he could reach a so-called agreement to end the war in Ukraine in a day. This seems unlikely, since Russia and Ukraine have already been at war for more than a decade. Given Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the latter will likely feel empowered to continue both the war in Ukraine and the undermining of NATO countries, knowing that Trump may not respond.

This is reported in the CNN article.

Trump pretends to be a great negotiator, so perhaps he could make a deal now that Ukraine is fighting a war with the Russians and knows that the Republican-controlled Congress will probably not support spending billions more to finance their war, CNN believes.

“Meanwhile, the fact that the Russians have added North Korean soldiers to the war indicates that Putin does not want to declare a mass mobilization in Russia, since this is an unpopular decision. Therefore, he may have his own interests in winding down the war on terms that he considers favorable,” the material says.

Annexed Crimea and the occupied east: what Trump's “agreement” could be

They add that the general outlines of the agreement, which is likely to end the fighting, could be that Russia will retain Crimea, which it annexed in 2024, and Ukraine will get back some of the territories in eastern Ukraine that Russia seized after that. Ukraine will not join NATO, but will receive security guarantees from the United States, such as Japan.

However, the publication notes that neither the Russians nor the Ukrainians will be satisfied with the elements of this agreement. The alternative is eternal war, millions will die.

According to Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton, the future 47th US president will “fundamentally rethink the premise of NATO.” But earlier this year, the US Congress made it harder to leave the alliance, ensuring that it would take a supermajority vote in the Senate or an act of the full Congress to remove the US from the alliance.

“But Trump's public statements could significantly undermine NATO, as he is the commander-in-chief of the alliance's most important country. In February, Trump said he would encourage Russia to do “whatever they want” to any NATO member that does not spend 2% of its GDP on its own defense,” the article says.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Putin's ambitions were bigger than seizing Ukraine: “Russia is escalating its campaign of hybrid attacks in our allied territories, directly interfering in our democracies, sabotaging industry and committing violence. … This is evidence of that the shifting front line in this war is no longer just happening in Ukraine. The front line is increasingly moving beyond the borders to the Baltic region, to Western Europe.”

“Considering Trump's “strange affair” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia will likely feel empowered to continue these efforts to undermine NATO countries, knowing that Trump may not respond,” CNN adds.

Recall that Donald Trump announced the day before that he would end the war in Ukraine, while a number of statements about negotiations have again appeared online. They were heard both from Western leaders and from Putin's fans.
