The founder of the Telegram messenger Pavel Durov on the evening of Tuesday, October 5, announced on his Telegram channel that the day before – on the day of the massive disruption in the work of social networks Facebook and Instagram, as well as the Whatsapp messenger – more than 70 million new users registered in Telegram.
According to Durov, in particular, in the Americas, millions of users tried at the same time to register in the messenger he created, which led to a slowdown in his work.
Large-scale Facebook crash
Due to a large-scale failure in the work of Facebook, Instagram, as well as the Whatsapp messenger, their users could not open their accounts for several hours. In addition, some Facebook employees were unable to physically enter their offices because their electronic keys did not work.
According to Pavel Durov, Telegram is “the largest independent platform for sending messages.” “We will not let you down when others do,” he wrote.
Criticism of Telegram over blocking the Smart Voting bot
In late September, Telegram faced a wave of criticism in Russia after, during the elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the messenger blocked the “Smart Vote” bot of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny's team, which was giving recommendations to voters who did not want candidates from the United Russia party to win.
Then Durov justified this decision by the senselessness of fighting the Russian regulator without the support of Apple and Google and pointed out that the demand of the Russian authorities to remove the Telegram bot “was not clearly unconstitutional.”
