After being eliminated from the European Football Championship with three points after the group stage, there is a need in Russia for a new national coach. As the national association announced on Thursday, Stanislav Chertschessov's contract has been terminated with immediate effect. The goal of the Russians, who faced Belgium, Finland and Denmark in Group B, had been to reach the knockout phase.
The former FC Tirol goalkeeper Tschertschessow had led the Russian national team for almost five years – since August 10, 2016. Russia hosted the World Cup in 2018 and surprisingly reached the quarter-finals. Cherchessov's contract would have expired next year.
“The Russian Football Association is now starting to look for candidates for the post of national coach,” said Association President Alexander Djukov. It is about preparing for the World Cup in Qatar next year.
