Over the past six months, the self-proclaimed president of Belarus has already signed eight decrees on pardon.

Self-proclaimed president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has pardoned 23 people convicted of “extremist” crimes. Among those pardoned are three women.

Radio Liberty writes about this, citing publications in official Belarusian media.

“14 [pardoned political prisoners – ed.] have chronic diseases, 12 have children. All of them wrote petitions for pardon, admitted their guilt and repented,” Lukashenko's press service told journalists.

According to the publication, over the past six months, the Belarusian dictator has already signed eight decrees on pardon.

According to human rights activists, thousands of people have suffered from political repression in Belarus over the past 4.5 years. Almost 3,600 people, including 656 women, received real prison terms.

“Last year, 207 people were released, whom human rights activists recognized as political prisoners. According to the Viasna center, as of January 18, 1,244 people deprived of their liberty for political reasons remain in prison in Belarus,” the publication says.

At the same time, the number of political prisoners in Belarus continues to grow in the run-up to the next imitation of “presidential elections” scheduled for January 26.

Recall that social networks may be blocked in Belarus during the elections. In this way, the authorities are trying to complicate coordination between opposition representatives during possible protests.
