Activists in Georgia are changing their demands: why the repeal of the scandalous law did not stop the protests

In Georgia, despite the statement of the ruling Georgian Dream party about the withdrawal of the scandalous bill on “foreign agents” from the parliament, civil activists intend to gather again for a protest action in the center of Tbilisi.

The protesters seek to gather again for protests on the evening of March 9, and they will last until Georgia takes a “guaranteed pro-Western course.”

This was stated by Tsotne Koberidze, a member of the Gorchi-More Freedom party, writes SOVA.

Activists are demanding clarity from the Georgian authorities on exactly how they plan to revoke the Law on Agents of Foreign Influence. As well as the immediate release of all detained protesters.

“There will certainly be an action today! There are many young people who do not trust the Georgian Dream and believe that we are the guarantor of the country's rapprochement with the West,” Koberidze said.

In turn, Irakli Favlenishvili, deputy of the opposition National Movement, added that the Georgian Dream party in power has repeatedly “scammed” the Georgian society, therefore “it is important to do something, not to make promises.”

“This cannot be considered a victory, especially against the background of the fact that dozens of young people have been arrested, and the whereabouts of many are unknown. All of them must be released. Our struggle and wave of protests will not stop until Georgia's European perspective is guaranteed,” Favlenishvili quotes the Georgian ” First channel”.

Recall that on March 7, the Georgian parliament adopted in the first reading a bill on “foreign agents”, which is very similar to a similar Russian law and contradicts the pro-European aspirations of Georgians. As a result, in Tbilisi, people went to a mass protest.

More than 15 thousand people took to the streets of the capital of Georgia. Water cannons were used against the protesters. In some places, the demonstrators built barricades of benches and garbage cans.

In addition, during the protests, people brought Ukrainian flags with them, listened to Ukrainian songs and chanted “Glory to Ukraine!”

Subsequently, the parliamentary majority of the Georgian Dream party made concessions and withdrew the draft law on the transparency of foreign influence, already adopted in the first reading.
