HAVANA, July 31. / TASS /. Specialists of the Cuban Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy are installing a Russian automated wide-angle telescope, which will be used for observing space bodies and tracking space debris. The Granma newspaper writes about this on Saturday.

Zulia Barsena Fonseca, deputy director for science at the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy, told the publication that “the institution pays special attention to research on solar activity, taking into account the impact it has on many areas of modern life.” The focus is on the appearance and evolution of sunspots, she said.

According to the deputy director, “over the past two years, scientific cooperation has been strengthened with several divisions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in particular, in the field of updating technologies for observing and monitoring solar activity, as well as from celestial objects located at different distances from the Earth.”

In 2017, plans were announced to install Russian equipment at two Cuban astronomical observatories.
