Amid the threat of an eruption, Iceland declared a state of emergency.
A volcanic eruption is expected in Iceland in a few days. According to experts, it could destroy the infrastructure of the city of Grindavik, located near the capital Reykjavik.
The Guardian writes about this.
Due to the threat of an eruption, a state of emergency was declared in the country. Shelters and relief centers have opened in several nearby cities.
The city of Grindavik on the southwestern coast, home to about 4 thousand people, was evacuated on the morning of November 11. This happened after magma, which moves beneath the earth's crust, triggered hundreds of earthquakes, which are believed to be a precursor to the eruption.
As a result of these earthquakes, a crack approximately 15 kilometers long appeared.
The head of Iceland's Office of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, Vidir Reynisson, does not rule out that the eruption could occur on the ocean floor, which would likely result in a large ash cloud.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) observed the accumulation of magma under the Earth's surface at a depth of about five kilometers for several days, and on Friday, November 10, the magma began to rise vertically.
“What we are seeing now is an unprecedented event. We are talking about the speed of this process and volumes or rates of influx that are much higher than we have seen on the peninsula so far,” said IMO volcanic hazard coordinator Sara Barsotti.
Before the previous eruption, which occurred in March 2021, the peninsula had been quiet for eight centuries. Volcanologists believe that a new cycle of increased activity could take several decades or centuries.
Since the end of October, the Icelandic Meteorological Service has recorded more than 20 thousand tremors, and during November 9 there were about 1,400.
