A volcanic eruption began in Iceland after a series of earthquakes.
In Iceland On January 14, a volcanic eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula – residents of the town of Grindovik were evacuated in advance.
Iceland has been trying to build rock barriers in recent weeks to prevent lava from reaching Grindavik, and the eruption appears to have breached the defenses.
According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the largest recorded earthquake so far was 3.5 on the Richter scale.
Lava fountains are now flowing towards Grindavik. According to calculations by the Coast Guard helicopter crew, the eruption perimeter is about 450 meters from the northernmost houses of the city.

At least 200 earthquakes occurred in the area near Grindavik around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday, according to the Met Office. .

This is the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021.
Iceland is located between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, the two largest on the planet. The country is a seismic and volcanic hot spot—the two plates moving in opposite directions.
