A U.S. Senator called on Lukashenko to resign

The head of the US Senate Committee for international Affairs Jim Risch called on the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to resign if the election results in the country are not confirmed. The words of his written statement according to RIA Novosti.

“Mr. Lukashenko must allow a genuine tabulation of yesterday’s vote to leave if, as reported, he was not re-elected in a democratic way. (…) The peaceful transfer of power is vital for the future of Belarus and its sovereignty,” the letter reads. Rish also urged the head of Belarus to stop pressure on journalists and protesters and restore Internet access.

Earlier, the protesters supported the candidate in US presidents from Democrats Joe Biden. He also called on Lukashenko to respect the rights of civilians and to desist from further violence against them.

In Belarus for the second day, there are street clashes between security forces and protesters, unhappy with the results of the presidential elections on 9 August. According to official data, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko gained more than 80 percent of the vote, the opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovski — less than 10 percent. During street clashes used machinery, water cannons, stun grenades, rubber bullets, involved military forces. Detained about three thousand people, dozens were injured, one died. Lukashenko has accused the opposition that the organizers of the protests “needed sacred sacrifice”.
