A southern white rhino cub born at the San Diego Zoo
A southern white rhino cub was born at the San Diego Zoo, according to CBS Los Angeles.
The baby, who is only one week old, has already begun to explore her home, while she does not stray far from her mother. The cub was born to a female named Kiang and a rhinoceros J. Gregory. Zoo staff have not yet chosen a name for the new animal.
“She is very adventurous and not afraid of many things, because she is sure that her mother is always behind her and will always stand up for her if anything,” said Matt Galvin, senior wildlife conservationist at San Diego Zoo.
According to wildlife conservationists, the baby white rhino is completely healthy and well nourished. They added that Kianga turned out to be an excellent mother who is very attentive to her baby.
At birth, this animal weighs about 125 pounds. It is expected to gain about 100 pounds (56.5 kg) per month during the first year. In three years its weight will be about 5 thousand pounds (more than two tons).
The southern white rhino is a subspecies of the white rhinoceros, the most common of the two subspecies of the white rhinoceros. As of the end of December 2007, the total population of these animals in the wild was 17,460 individuals.
Earlier, MIR 24 said that a safari park in the Samara region sheltered three roe deer cubs. The kids were on the verge of death, but the employees of the establishment came out and put them on their feet.
