The Snezhinka International Arctic Station in Yamal was organized as part of a joint expedition by the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Center for Arctic Exploration. According to scientists, the purpose of geomagnetic measurements was to assess the nature of the parameters of the magnetic field, their distribution and identify the place most suitable for the installation of a magnetic observatory. As a result of measurements, an area was found that was free from man-made magnetic interference and had a suitable distribution of the natural magnetic field.
Deployment of a geomagnetic observatory to monitor the magnetic field in the territory of Snezhinka will provide an opportunity for a wide range of scientific research. The data of the geomagnetic observatory can be used by the scientific community for such fundamental research as the study of the secular course of the magnetic field, the development and updating of geomagnetic models, the analysis of geomagnetic disturbances and the study of the polar ionosphere.
The expedition was organized as part of the stages of work on design estimates for the construction of the station. Earlier, based on the data obtained from the Loza georadar, the general plan for the construction of the Snezhinka MAS facilities was adjusted, an archaeological exploration expedition took place in October, and in July MIPT specialists carried out a preliminary geodetic survey of the complex site and the adjacent territory, and explored the lake.
The international scientific testing ground will be built on the shores of the Jade Lake in the foothills of the Rai-Iz mountain range on the eastern slopes of the Polar Urals. The agreement on the implementation of a world-class strategic project was signed by the Governor of Yamal, Dmitry Artyukhov, and the rector of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Dmitry Livanov.
