Ali Yerlikaya said that the ship lost contact after leaving the port in the Karadeniz Eregli district of Zonguldak. Then it crashed into a breakwater and sank.
Contact with the 12 crew members who were on the ship has not yet been established.

The Turkish cargo ship Kafkametler was heading from the Russian port of Temryuk with a cargo of ferroalloys, sent a distress signal in the morning near the city of Eregli and could not be contacted again. There were 12 crew members on board the cargo ship. It was also not possible to contact them.
It is reported that the ship's captain said before the incident that he was drifting towards the Ereğli military breakwater. Attempts to contact the ship were unsuccessful.

Search and rescue operations will continue using air and sea depending on weather conditions, Turkey's General Directorate of Maritime Affairs said.
