The painting, which was valued at $15 thousand just two years ago, was almost sold for $14 million at Sotheby's auction. It turned out that the work “The Adoration of the Kings”, previously erroneously attributed to Rembrandt's student, was painted by Rembrandt himself Rembrandt.

CNN reports this.

Painted in the late 1620s, The Adoration of Kings depicts the meeting of the Three Wise Men with the baby Jesus. An ancient mention of the canvas belongs to the collector Konstantin Ranst and dates back to 1714.

1960 German art historian Kurt Bauch, who knew “The Adoration of Kings” only from a black and white photograph, stated that the painting was painted by one of the artist’s students, and not by him personally. Since that time it has not been attributed to the brushes of a famous Dutch artist.

Two years ago, the painting was put up for auction in Amsterdam by the auction house Christie's – then it was valued at 15 thousand dollars. However, an anonymous buyer bought it during the auction for 908 thousand dollars, and then transferred “The Adoration of Kings” to the auction house Sotheby's.

Sothebyʼs carefully examined the painting and determined that the painting was painted by Rembrandt himself, and not by one of the students of his school. The auction house believes the artist created the canvas early in his career.

Previously it became known that specialists from the National Gallery of Scotland discovered a previously unknown self-portrait of the artist on the back of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh “Head of a Peasant Woman”. /p> More news
