Scientists explain that noctilucent clouds form from ice crystals on dust particles left behind by meteors.
On the night of June 23 A rare phenomenon has been observed over Europe – noctilucent clouds, also known as “electric blue clouds”.
The Watcher writes about this.
Photos of the unusual phenomenon were taken by observers from all over Europe, including Denmark, Austria , Germany, the Netherlands, England, Poland, Slovakia, Russia and Belgium.
It is noted that the clouds formed despite high solar activity, which usually prevents this phenomenon.
Scientists explain that noctilucent clouds form from ice crystals on dust particles left behind by meteors. They need both water to form ice crystals and the very low temperatures found in the mesosphere.
This display was unexpected in 2024, which was predicted to be a bad year for noctilucent clouds due to high solar activity. Typically, this phenomenon tends to recede during the years around solar maximum as increased solar activity heats the Earth's upper atmosphere, breaking up the water molecules needed to form ice,” the paper says.
However, recent events suggest that additional factors may be at play in 2024. One of the contributing factors is excess moisture in the atmosphere due to the underwater eruption of the Tonga volcano, scientists said.
Recall that we previously talked about noctilucent clouds. This mysterious beauty can only be seen on short summer nights.
