A rally in support of Russia and against the agreement between Slovakia and the United States on military cooperation was held near the building of the Russian embassy in Bratislava. This was announced by the press secretary of the Russian diplomatic mission Vitaly Zhitnyuk, RIA Novosti reports.
He noted that about a hundred people took part in the meeting, some of them holding Russian and Slovak flags.
“At the end of the rally, after the speeches of the speakers, the anthems of Slovakia and Russia were played, and during the rally, Russian songs were played. The rally participants also presented the Russian Embassy with a bouquet of fresh flowers in the colors of the Russian tricolor,” Zhitnyuk said.
On February 9, the majority of deputies of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Slovakia approved an agreement on military cooperation between the country and the United States. 79 deputies voted in favor of the agreement, 60 voted against, and one abstained. On the same day, it was ratified by the President of the Republic, Zuzana Chaputova.
Negotiations on this agreement caused heated debate in Parliament. Slovak Prosecutor General Maros Zilinka said that the document contains 35 contradictions to national legislation.
According to this agreement, the US Air Force will be able to use the military airfields of Malacky-Kukhinya in the east of the republic and Sliach in its central part free of charge. The contract will be valid for 10 years, and after the end can be extended. Under the agreement, the United States will allocate $100 million to modernize Slovakia's defense infrastructure.
