About five years ago, a Spanish couple embarked on an ambitious plan to travel the world on motorcycles. They have already visited 66 countries, covering 170 thousand kilometers.
However, while traveling in India, the couple was attacked by a group of local men.
“What happened to us is something we wouldn't wish on anyone. Seven men raped me,” the 28-year-old woman shared on social media, along with images of horrific injuries on her face.
Recounting the horror of their experience, her 64-year-old man said they were attacked while sleeping in a tent. The attackers threatened to kill and raped his wife, and beat the husband himself.
Indian police have already identified suspects in the gang rape of a Spanish tourist. However, only three of them were arrested. Others involved in the crime are promised to be arrested later.
American author and journalist David Josef Volodzko commented that “the level of sexual aggression in India for several years was unlike any other place it had ever been.”
“Once a complete stranger, a British woman, asked to sleep in my bed and pretend to be my girlfriend during a train ride because a man passing in the corridor was licking her leg and she felt insecure.
I've never met a traveler who hasn't been groped, attacked, or worse, even if they were only in the country for a few days,” he added.
India is called one of the most dangerous places for women. On average, 90 rapes were reported there in 2022. However, human rights activists say the actual number may be higher due to the fact that many victims do not contact law enforcement.
It was previously reported that in India a priest raped, killed and cremated a nine-year-old girl in front of her parents.
