From January 1, a number of zoos, circuses, dolphinariums and aquariums will be suspended in Russia, and those institutions that have not received a license for their work will be temporarily closed. This is reported by TASS with reference to the statement of the Rosselkhoznadzor.

The reason for the refusal of licensing may be a violation of the conditions of keeping, transporting or feeding the animals. A fine will be imposed on the organization and an appeal to the court will be initiated to suspend its activities until the comments are eliminated.

“Rosselkhoznadzor included all organizations that did not apply for a license of the procedure in the plan of inspections for the next year, which is now being approved by the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation,” added the Rosselkhoznadzor.

The department noted that the organizations that received licenses – 147 in total – have done significant work to improve the conditions for keeping animals. Among them are the Moscow circuses of Nikulin and on Vernadsky Prospekt, the Kuklachev Cat Theater, Moskvarium and the largest Russian zoos. There are still about 180 applications in work at this time.

From the beginning of 2021, the Rosselkhoznadzor also began to prohibit the import of GMO pet food into the country. The organization of small and medium-sized enterprises “Opora Rossii” warned that such a situation would lead to the bankruptcy of many enterprises in the industry, and the new restrictions contradict the very idea of the ban. The vast majority of these products are intended for cats and dogs that are not consumed by humans.
