Rutte is the favorite to replace Jens Stoltenberg as NATO Secretary General.

Countries NATO, who support the candidacy of Mark Rutte for the post of secretary general of the alliance, are working to ensure that this decision is made before the summer of this year.

This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to own sources.

It is reported that Rutte's supporters want the decision on his election as Secretary General to be made before the summer.

The deadline for electing a new secretary general may be extended, but a number of NATO countries are keen for a decision to be made before the NATO leaders' summit in Washington in July.

Rutte is the favorite to replace Jens Stoltenberg, whose term expires in October. It can be accepted and has become all members of the block.

However, some Eastern European countries still need to support Rutte.

“The role of the NATO Secretary General will be especially important as Russia's war with Ukraine could drag on for years. The NATO leader will need to strike a balance between avoiding any direct consequences or wider escalation between the Alliance and Russia, as well as encouraging allies to continue military and financial support for Ukraine, as the public begins to tire of these expenses,” the publication notes.

We recall that it was previously reported that NATO Assistant Secretary General predicted a decision on inviting Ukraine to the bloc at the summit in Washington.

In addition, we previously informed that Polish President Andrzej Duda said that Ukraine’s entry into NATO can be launched even before the end of the war.
