A new type of coronavirus discovered in Nigeria
A new strain of coronavirus has been identified in Nigeria. This is reported by TASS, referring to the director of the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention John Nkengasong.
“We are talking about a special mutant virus that is not similar to the variant recently discovered in the UK,” he said.
According to the director, the virus may be similar to the strain identified on December 18 in South Africa.
“More research is needed,” Nkengasonga said.
The strain was identified in samples taken on August 3 and October 9 in the Nigerian state of Osun.
According to preliminary data, it is not as aggressive as the 501.V2. In South Africa, the 501.V2 mutant virus has caused a second powerful wave of the pandemic.
