On Sunday, February 11, the former prime minister Minister Alexander Stubb won the presidential elections in Finland. In the second round of voting, he beat former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto in the number of votes received.
The Finnish publication Yle reports this.
In the second round of elections, Stubb received 51.6 percent of the popular vote, and Haavisto received 48.4 percent. The difference between the election winner and his competitor was less than 99 thousand votes.
Haavisto has already congratulated his rival on his victory, recognizing him as the 13th president.
Alexander Stubb will take office on March 1.
With limited powers compared to those of the prime minister, the head of state, elected for a six-year term, directs the country's foreign policy in close cooperation with the government.
He is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. This important role has become even more important in light of geopolitical events in Europe, in particular the entry of Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, into NATO.
What Alexander Stubb promised
55-year-old Alexander Stubb promised his compatriots in his election program that he would work for a safe, open Finland with international connections, put its interests first, and also be a unifying factor for the country.
The newly elected president stated that he supports Ukraine, denying the possibility of ceding territory in exchange for peace with Russia, and promised to support our country's movement into the EU.
Recall that on January 28, during the voting in the Finnish presidential elections, none of the candidates received an overwhelming majority of votes. At the same time, Stubb took first place in the first round of voting.
