Scientists from the Kuzbass State Technical University have proposed a new method for processing hazardous chemical waste – spent catalysts. Extraction of useful components will cost two to three times less than extraction from mineral raw materials. This was reported in a press release published on the website Godnauki.rf.

Researchers have proposed to extract rare and valuable metals from catalysts that are suitable for making alloys. This will help solve the problem of storing highly toxic chemical wastes that cause serious harm to the environment due to the release of arsenic, vanadium, sulfuric acid and other hazardous substances into soil and water.

According to scientists, the technology proposed by them makes it possible not only to neutralize catalysts at relatively low temperatures, but also to obtain granulates from them for alloying steel. Such products can replace ferromolybdenum, molybdenum oxide or metal molybdenum. Processing methods include roasting, chlorination, leaching, chemical precipitation, extraction and others.
