A new material has been invented in Russia to protect against radiation

Developing high-quality and safe equipment that protects against radiation is important, for example, for doctors who provide radiation therapy, or for engineers working at nuclear power plants. Today, the former use screens, helmets and goggles made of special glasses for their protection, but they often contain toxic lead: it is not safe to work with it and it is rather difficult to dispose of it.

Experts around the world continue to look for suitable material that will effectively protect against radiation and will be safe to work with. Scientists from the South Ural State University in Chelyabinsk have created a new material: on its basis, special glass can be made to protect people in those industries where radioactive radiation is used.

We came up with a groundbreaking material that could replace lead and showed that it can effectively shield gamma rays. Strontium-borate-tellurite glasses have both high density and effective atomic number. Strontium oxide is also a heavy metal oxide, and if added to glass, it will increase the density of the material, which is an important parameter in radiation protection, ” – Daria Tishkevich, Junior Researcher at the SUSU Crystal Growth Laboratory.
