A new material for 3D printing based on a clam tooth has been created

Experts from Germany and the United States have discovered a mineral in the shellfish tissue that is suitable for 3D printing in terms of its parameters. Due to santabarbite, the mollusk is under great stress, while possessing plasticity, according to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences .

Previously, experts have not seen this substance in the tissues of living organisms. Santabarbarite is in the form of nanoparticles ranging in size from three to eleven nanometers.

A team of researchers tried to create a material similar to the structure of the stylus fabric using 3D printing. As a result of their efforts, a new composite has been obtained that is superior in strength to many modern dental implant materials.

It is noted that the scientists managed to achieve almost the same values of the elastic modulus as that of the stylus tissue, but in terms of hardness, their material is still inferior to the natural sample.

Previously, researchers at the University of Cambridge have created a sustainable material that could replace disposable plastics. It turned out to be an imitation of spider silk.
