A gambler from the Indian state of Bihar lost his wife to friends. As part of a bet, he sent her to his friends, allowing them to rape her husband. When the woman rebelled again, he poured acid on her, writes The Independent, citing local law enforcement agencies.
“The couple have been married for about ten years. The gambling husband lost his wife at the end of October, ”said senior police officer Rajesh Kumar. According to him, as part of the bet, the man forcibly sent his wife to his friends, and they raped her. When the woman resisted, he beat her and locked her at home. On November 2, she rebelled again, and her husband doused her with acid.
A law enforcement officer clarified that at the moment the man, whose name is not disclosed, is in custody. He is accused of acid assault, gang rape, rape and illegal detention. According to Kumar, the police are currently identifying the men who took part in the rape.
Al Jazeera points out that, according to the National Commission on Women, during the lockdown in India, the number of reported cases of domestic violence in the country almost doubled. Between March 23 and April 16, 587 complaints of domestic violence were recorded, which is almost 45 percent more than in the previous 25 days. This indicator is associated with forced isolation with abusive partners, financial problems, as well as a lack of access to alcohol.
In the report, Oxfam India noted that at the beginning of the quarantine in the country there was a surge in violence, but after the relaxation of restrictive measures, the number of complaints decreased.
